Balancing work and tertiary study doesn’t have to be complicated, but it is important to be aware of your basic employment rights before signing on the dotted line.
Here are our top three tips to help you advocate for yourself when you're entering any new job.
Trial periods Trial periods Some employers may include a ‘trial period’ in your employment contract to determine if you are suitable for the role. Trial periods can last for up to 90 calendar days. Workers on a trial period still have all minimum employment rights and responsibilities, except your employer can dismiss you at any time within that timeframe.
Rest and meal breaks Rest and meal breaks Every employer must provide at least the minimum number of paid/unpaid breaks for every shift you work. These depend on the number of consecutive hours worked during each shift/period. Refer to slide two for more details!
Secure a contract Secure a contract Before starting any job, your employer is legally required to provide you with an employment contract for you to sign. Signing this before beginning your new role will allow your employer to clearly set expectations, and ensure you are protected by New Zealand’s minimum employment rights. Your employment contract must include a description of the role, your wage/salary rate and agreed hours of work; including the number of hours, start and finish times, and days of the week.
