Flexible hours to suit your schedule, and support to develop your skills and move into leadership roles. Support our mission to make STEM learning more accessible to the community!

We are currently hiring tutors to assist later in Term 4 and in January holiday programmes.

Tutor roles and responsibilities

As a tutor, you have the opportunity to be involved in the following programmes:

  • After school classes: 3:30pm - 5:00pm in Strathmore Park, Porirua, and Wainuiomata (and in schools across Wellington)
  • School holiday programmes: 9am - 3pm in Strathmore Park, Porirua, and Wainuiomata
  • Inspire in Schools programmes: a range of hours during term time in schools across Wellington

We generally aim for a ratio of 1 tutor to 10 students. Most of our term classes are around 15 - 30 students, while our holiday programmes are as large as 50.

Tutors are paid from $27 per hour, which includes teaching time, preparation of class materials, and administrative work such as meetings with our management team. Hours are very flexible - we work collaboratively with our tutors to build our schedule for each term and holiday period, based on how many classes each tutor would like to be involved with. Exact hours for class prep also depends on a tutor’s role in a particular class:

Leaders run activities in classes, and have opportunities to create class content depending on their schedule. They keep our management team and helper tutors updated on progress and planning for classes, and keep track of any equipment needed. Leaders are also responsible for general classroom and behaviour management, and contacting parents if needed.

Helpers are there to support a leader’s teaching of an activity. They are expected to be versatile to understand instructions given, help students with difficult steps and troubleshoot technical problems. Helpers also sometimes take on administrative roles during classes, such as marking a roll, and managing equipment including laptops & charging, students’ robotics projects, etc.

Tutors generally start in a helper role, and begin to take on leader roles in some classes as they gain more confidence. We aim to give tutors as many leadership opportunities as possible, so tutors often move quickly into these roles while still helping with additional classes. We allow tutors flexibility in what subjects they’re interested in leading, and provide support in creating content for classes when needed. Tutors are also free to teach as many or few classes per week as suits their schedule. Some of our tutors are based at one location, while others help across multiple areas in Wellington.

Tutor skills

There are 3 broad categories of skills we’re interested in for this role - teaching and mentoring children, versatile coding & logic, and specialised technical knowledge.

Teaching and mentoring children: Tutors are expected to be able to build a rapport with our students, understand how to explain particular concepts, and keep a classroom attentive and well-organised. Previous experience working with children is not required but beneficial, either way we usually ask potential tutors to come and assist with a class so we can observe their skills in this area. We teach a broad range of students with a variety of learning styles, so we expect our tutors to be able to listen to and empathise with each student’s needs. Tutors should be adaptable to individualise learning where needed. We are also looking for tutors to take initiative during class, actively checking in with students and showing support and enthusiasm for their projects.

Versatile coding & logic: All of our tutors are expected to have some coding and logic ability. This is so that tutors can pick up existing activities to lead outside of their specialised knowledge. We look for adaptability and willingness to learn, and have seen many of our tutors branch into new areas of tech with their teaching at Matamoe.

Specialised technical knowledge: With the range of subjects we teach, we find it useful to have tutors who specialise in different areas. Knowledge in any of the following areas is beneficial to us, and we’re always looking to expand our programmes if someone can bring a new skill to our classes.

About Matamoe Hub

Matamoe Hub provides free STEM programmes to students in Year 4 - Year 13 across Wellington. Our aim is to make tech feel more accessible to students and help them find a passion within tech subjects, particularly for Māori, Pasifika, and wāhine. This goal has led to a focus on hands-on learning and creativity in technology. We currently teach game development, robotics, 3D design, 3D printing, coding, and virtual reality, and we’re always looking to expand into new subjects. We are based in Strathmore Park at Scots College, and have established programmes in Porirua and Wainuiomata.
